Genetics and Experimental Biology

The Genetics and Experimental Biology bachelor’s programme provides reliable and in depth knowledge of biological processes at the cellular and molecular levels. During lectures and laboratory classes, students find answers to the most pressing questions. The programme introduces students to modern techniques in genetic engineering, histology, cytology and physiology, and shows how to operate specialised equipment. Candidates learn how to use molecular genetics data in biology and biochemistry, as well as in phylogenetic and environmental research. This bachelor’s programme offers a wide range of teaching formats: from onsite laboratory sessions conducted in small groups to online classes using modern distance learning technologies.

The programme combines the core foundations of molecular genetics with biochemistry, cell biology, and elements of bioinformatics. This broad academic base enables graduates to communicate effectively with specialists from different fields and to tackle complex research problems that require a multidisciplinary approach. Students work with the latest technologies – from advanced microscopy and genomic engineering to modern methods of sequence data analysis.

The Genetics and Experimental Biology bachelor's programme responds directly to the most urgent challenges of the modern world, equipping students with the competences needed to translate advanced genetic knowledge into concrete, sustainable solutions. It addresses key global issues such as biomedical and health challenges, climate change and biodiversity protection, the digitalisation of biological data, food security, and the transfer of knowledge and innovation. Main Requirements:

• Legalised High School graduation certificate or equivalent ( IB or EB diplomas - legalisation is not required )
• High School transcript of grades (legalisation is optional)
• NAWA Director's Individual Recognition Statement*

• Passport photocopy or ID card (EU candidates)
• Digital passport size photo

Additional Requirements: Online conducted oral exam*

* Mandatory if the high school certificate is issued in an educational system outside the EU/EFTA/OECD, United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, Ukraine and China, and if it is not an IB or EB diploma or covered by an international agreement.

Scope of entrance exam material and rules:

Scope of material:

• The cell
• Metabolism
• Cell division
• Tissues
• Structure and functions of human organs and organ systems
• Structure, functions and significance of nucleic acids
• The genetic code
• Theory of inheritance – basic principles
• Basic techniques used in genetic engineering (DNA electrophoresis, PCR method)
• Structure of viruses and mechanisms of cell infection
• Life processes of bacteria and their importance (including for humans and the environment)
• Morphological diversity and life processes of fungi
• Characteristic features of angiosperms and gymnosperms
• Structure and functions of plant organs
• Diversity of invertebrate animals (flatworms, nematodes, annelids, molluscs, arthropods: crustaceans, arachnids and insects)
• Characteristic features and biology of vertebrates (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals)
• Basic ecological concepts
• Human impact on the biosphere, the Green Deal

Points scale: 0-20; Minimum points to pass: 10
